Journal #1

1. Text without visual component
In the picture  we see no graphic elements or drawing or only a text, it is simply words and numbers. This is a page from a book I have recent been exposed to.

2. Visual Without Text
In the visual below we see Darth Vader. I use this picture because I have been playing a Star Wars video game. This is an example of a visual without text because it has no words or numbers but it has line texture shading and color.

3. Adapted to a specific audience, purpose, and context
At the website below we see a picture of a family next to an add for a program that is going to air about poverty. It is obvious that the producer wants to show that the information in the "Ask Eleven" show contentions ideas focused on the family. It has a cognate point of view by presenting the subject of ending poverty and showing a picture of a family which is the type of audience KBYU 11 trys to appeal to.

   4. Balance
We will again use the picture of Darth Vader because I think it is an excellent example of the idea of the cognate balance. The picture is symmetrical and has equal weight on both sides. You could fold the picture in half and and the sides of Darth Vader's Helmet would be close to touching.  The light is arranged so that similar parts on both sides of the mask are eliminated.

5. Classification or grouping into categories &
20.   Grouping by shape, spatial nearness, or division

From the picture below we see how xbox has developed the Gesalt theory "law of Common Region" in the start up menu by drawing lines around similar topics such as "adds" and "recently used apps." By drawing these lines the user identifies that those things belong together.

6. Comparison and contras (juxtaposition)
In the picture below we identify the cognate comparison. Two trucks are parked side by side so a person can see how big one is compared to the other. As you can see my friends truck is not that much smaller than an old army truck.

 7. Description or Details
In the add we see a grey room with vibrant blue light that actually lifts the person in the room up off the floor. This is a great visual representation of the Description Cognate because the author of the add uses principles of neurophysiology by using bright colors to stimulate our cone cells in our eye that gives a physical sensation. The excitement felt from viewing the Dolby sound add allows the user to
feel through visual perception how listening to sound through Dolby engineered sound can feel.
Please stop youtube video at 0:10 for picture that is being refereed to.

                                                               8. Narration
With the coming super bowl I thought it would be fun to add a picture in those regaurds. This picture says a thousand words. By a Ecological perspecttion and cultural perspective of the picture, most Americans recognize that this spicific moment in time tells a story of minutes, hours, months, and years of hard work and disapline.  Winning the super bowl is any kids who plays or watchs football dream and to be on a team like that you must be a supremem athlete that wins all other suprmeme athlethlets. This picture tells an epic tail.

9.      Pattern (Repetition)
The picture below is the only picture I could think of when thinking of this visual principle. In the painting by Salvador Dali you see the repition of color and movement that is going nowhere.

10.  Point of view
I was reading KSL today and saw this article and thought it a perfect candidate for this assignment. The article is written from a mothers perspective on why she has decided to be a stay at home and the pressures that are associated to that. The news station used a picture of a white mother playing with her kids in her bead room. The picture is taken in a bead room while the mother and daughter are having a private moment playing. To be an eye witness to this event, you would need to be a family member or close friend. The news agency has localized this story by showing an image that appeals to people in Utah and might not appeal to all cultures in America. By using the particular place and time of the shot, the viewer gets an intimate point of view.

11.  Proportion
I choose this photo because I remember learning in school how Hitler used mass media and pictures like this one to make people believe that he was popular. From History we know that Hitler didn't start out popular but depicted himself as popular in movies and photos such as this one. In the picture we see young men Hitler had come solute him. In the picture we tons of boys crowding to see him. However what we don't see is that just past the boys is nothing. The picture was taken with Hitler looking as if many revered him, however when the picture was taken we know that wasn't such the case. This picture just show part of what was going on at the time and not the whole truth about the number of people that were there or the kinds of people.

12.  Unity
This picture was put on the Occupy Wall Street blog post. The news story showed that people are continuing to have occupy protests regardless of opposition.  The reason the photo is successful is that it shows the people with similar concerns and are unified. The are all wearing simular guy-fowks masks and carrying signs asking for an end to political corruption.

13.  Emphasis  &     14.  Conciseness
I came across this add and think it a perfect example of  the principle of emphasis. In the add we see the truck being advertised. The truck has bright colors, is in the center of the picture, and is well lighted. The truck is larger than any other graphics on the page and is the focal point of the add. The heavy emphasis on the truck expresses to the user that it is a real great truck. The add is also brief and to the point. It has a picture of the truck, and very few text. This brevity implies that nothing needs to be said about the truck because it is so great. The add says volumes by saying and showing little.

15.  Tone
In the picture below we see a flashy dressed, strait faced girl as if she was trying to say that she is way too cool. The name of the magazine is in big bold letters suggesting its boldness. The magazine cover sets the tone of the magazine by creating a picture that suggests the person is above all in her athletic pleasing appeal.

16.  Ethos
In the picture below we see the Nike symbol next to the words greatest basketball player. Lebrons James success has made him famous. By having the Nike sign next to to Lebron its suggesting to the mind that Nike is as cool as Lebron.

17.  Logos      &     18.  Pathos   &  19.  Figure-Ground contrast            In the picture below this shoe add appeals to guys reasoning because if the worlds greatest basketball player uses this shoe then it must be an amazing shoe. Many people love Lebron James so to see him with the shoes in such a picturesqueness moment makes us feel as if we are living in the same moment if we go out and purchase the shoes. The light shaded figure of Lebron separates himself from the darkness that the masses are depicted in the ground below him.

Logos, Ethos, Pathos

In class we were given the assignment to find pictures that appealed to the rhetorical conventions pathos, ethos, logos. I tried to use pictures I liked from my last post because I put a lot of time into finding them and we haven't used them yet.

Logos
This first picture is an appeal to logos. The picture shows how pretty sister missionary's can be and how mind blindingly ugly elders are and thus the importance that sister go on missions so people aren't scared of LDS representatives.
I received a lot of negative critique from female viewers. The said the elder on the bottom left with the orange watch is actually quite attractive and so I have decided to do another picture with an appeal using logos.

This next picture can also be controversially considered logos. The picture of the twin towers on fire as a result of terrorists crashing an American passenger plan into them, call the audience to justifiable action. It is justifiable because Americans ( the audience the news article was shown to) understand American policy is "Carry a big stick."  It is agreeable to maintain that policy that after someone attacks the US that we should retaliate in order to maintain the idea in the worlds mind that the US will not be attacked without some type of collateral damage. An attack from some outside country or civilization is considered an act of war.

I say its controversial because seeing the destruction also brings an emotional appeal because it brings feelings that we need to retaliate. Retaliation is an emotion response and ofttimes brings incorrect and unreliable actions because a lack of sound judgement. The lack of sound judgement because when a person is upset they don't think about consequences but only response to the action that caused the offense. However I feel that the picture is foremost logos because of the nature of American policy and American ideals. To ensure that policy Truman had established that lead to American superiority, America would reasonably need to go to war if attacked. The picture gives a logical argument to have an emotional response.

The picture could also be an appeal to ethos in that it appeals to American policy or character or guiding beliefs. However for this class we will stick with the original. It is understood a picture that uses just Logos could have been found but I feel this picture had a great impact on American history so it was used.

Ethos
The next picture can be considered an appeal to ethos. The picture we an advertisement for cigarettes. The figure smoking is in a place that is considered to be inhabited by the popular thus saying he is popular. He has a popular car and an attractive women also shown with him. This figure is also wearing aesthetically pleasing clothes and has a cigarette to top it off. The advertisement is trying to build the identity of the product by connecting it to other popular things. By building the character of the product people could connect popularity to cigarettes and be motivated to purchase them.

Pathos
The last picture is an advertisement for a movie.  The figure in the picture is part machine, has a laser sword, and their is a space ship in the back ground that can destroy entire planets. The character Darth Vader, is positioned in front of a hostile environment. All these elements are hostile and destructive and so a person cant help but feel uneasy when viewing the picture. That fear gives the feeling of unknown. People naturally want resolve so the feeling of unknown would motivate audiences to understand the events that would create that resolve in the end.

Back to Blogging : Visual Rhetoric

Blogging visual rhetorical images for my Visual Rhetoric class. These are images that I found to be visually striking with what little I know about visual rhetoric.

This picture shows the the Rhetorical mechanism "Antithesis." In the pic we see how mind numbingly hideous guys are and the complete and perfect opposite sister missionary's are.  It inspires girls to be sister missionaries because they can see the need for them.

Good class picture.

The add show that with McCain and Palin the world will end and families are in jeopardy. Inspires a need to vote against them to protect family.

I like the feeling of freedom you get when you ride motorcycles. By comparing suave with motorcycles and the colon in make me want to buy some of it.

I think this is a great example of showing the everyone
is doing it so its cool, even though we know now its not.

A visual representation of the rhetoric of words when spoken by people in power. I think its President Clinton being depicted, if so the picture shows that Clinton's words are deadly.

The image that lead to billions of dollars of debt and millions of lives lost

The "Its cool to do drugs" image that started a really dumb craze, that kills.

Political cartoon showing Obama outdoing Christ. Religion can be a major motivator.

Enough said

I like this image because I like to party and I like BYU.

Sex and beach sale.

Political cartoon showing how uncle SAM takes your property. Taking peoples positions can be an issue of real contention.

Darth Vader = scary. The image shows him in front of a planet that is being destroyed and a weapon that can destroy it. Makes me want to see a show that shows a person that can defeat it.

A perfect female physic and a scorpion going up her nose. It is so creepy that it shocks me and I want to read all the fine print to see what the image is all about.

A substance that is designed to inebriate is juxtaposed by a man that is in complete control. This would be another add that says if you want to be a man and be cool, drink this beer.
